INDIANA UNIVERSITY INFORMED CONSENT STATEMENT
Forensic Judgements
You are invited to participate in a research study, entitled Validating Conclusion Scales in the Forensic Sciences. Volunteers with normal vision and who are qualified to testify on fingerprint evidence in the United States are being recruited to participate in this study. We ask you to read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study.
The Study is being conducted by Dr. Tom Busey and his research team at the Indiana University Bloomington. It is sponsored by the National Institute of Justice under award 2018-DU-BX-0212.
The purpose of the study is to measure the perceived strength of various conclusion statements.
If you agree to participate, you will be one of approximately 1000 subjects who will be participating in this research.
If you agree to be in the study, you will do the following things.
You will see a brief video explaining the task and the interface. You will then see a series of statements related to the strength of evidence of various forensic conclusions. You will place each conclusion along a scale that indicates its strength relative to other forensic conclusions.
The experiment is self-paced, but we anticipate that the experiment will take no more than 15 minutes. You may only participate in the experiment once.
There are no known risks associated with the study.
Data from this research will help us to understand the perceived strength of various conclusion statements.
An alternative to participating in the study is to choose not to participate.
We will not disclose identifiable data collected for any reason without subject consent. Identifiable data collected will only be used for research purposes and no other purpose without subject consent. Your identity will be held in confidence in reports in which the study may be published and in databases in which results may be stored. Organizations that may inspect and/or copy your research records for quality assurance and data analysis include groups such as the study investigator and his/her research associates, the IU Institutional Review Board or its designees, and (as allowed by law) state or federal agencies, specifically the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), etc. who may want to access your research records.
Information collected from you for this study may be used for future research studies or shared with other researchers for future research. If this happens, information which could identify you will be removed before any information or specimens are shared. Since identifying information will be removed, we will not ask for your additional consent.
You will not receive payment for participation in this study.

Taking part in this study is voluntary. You may choose not to take part or may leave the study at any time. Leaving the study will not result in any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled and you will be compensated for your time up to that point. Your decision whether or not to participate in this study will not affect your current or future relations with the investigator(s).
